Crazy Rich Asians

Crazy Rich Asians is the outrageously funny debut novel about three super-rich, pedigreed Chinese families and the gossip, backbiting, and scheming that occurs when the heir to one of the most massive fortunes in Asia brings home his ABC (American-born Chinese) girlfriend to the wedding of the season.

When Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home, long drives to explore the island, and quality time with the man she might one day marry. What she doesn't know is that Nick's family home happens to look like a palace, that she'll ride in more private planes than cars, and that with one of Asia's most eligible bachelors on her arm, Rachel might as well have a target on her back. Initiated into a world of dynastic splendor beyond imagination, Rachel meets Astrid, the It Girl of Singapore society; Eddie, whose family practically lives in the pages of the Hong Kong socialite magazines; and Eleanor, Nick's formidable mother, a woman who has very strong feelings about who her son should--and should not--marry. Uproarious, addictive, and filled with jaw-dropping opulence, Crazy Rich Asians is an insider's look at the Asian JetSet; a perfect depiction of the clash between old money and new money; between Overseas Chinese and Mainland Chinese; and a fabulous novel about what it means to be young, in love, and gloriously, crazily rich.

This books reminds me of Fellowes' "Snobs", about a commoner gal married into a landed gentry family. The comparison stops there.Kwan's book is a fun read but not as thought provoking as Fellowes' book. Some remarked that there are so many names, it's hard to keep up. Well, Asian families are mostly big, blood related or marriage related. There are quite a lot of cliche characters in the book. Then again, if you see it as a satire, you may not mind the cliche.Judging by the ending, I think the author is planning a sequal because both Astrid and Nick's relationship are cliffhangers. My one negative about this book is that it can be shorter. The book on CDs has 11 discs. I think 8 or 9 discs would be about right. Mr.s Fellowes' Snobs is at this length and it starts and ends beautifully without much wasted paragraphs and chapters. I hope that Mr. Kwan can learn a thing or two from Mr. Fellowes. If so, his next crazy rich asians book will be much better.

It started off interesting... the author draws you in... and then he creates this designer name sling shot that just keeps slinging couture names at you— to a point wear you just want to duck and cover just to get to the plot line... only to discover the plot line is very thin, like the fabric of (insert famous designer’s name here) latest collection. The ending was rushed- you could hear his agent yelling at him to finish the book already! Love rarely conquers all. One book was enough.

SynopsisRachel and Nick have been dating for a while and this summer he wants to take her to his home in Singapore for a friend’s wedding and to meet his family. While they think nothing of spending the summer traveling together, his family, who are “crazy rich” (seriously ridiculously rich) are worried that Nick is going to propose to someone who they have not vetted and is not from a “good” family.Review I started this book thinking it would be about a ton of stereotypes blah blah blah. And that it would be a fluff read – it would take me just a few days to get through a beach read. Alas, I was wrong, but in a good way. I was totally entertained and wanted to read more for multiple reasons. One, Kwan describes some of the houses/treasures of the homes so well that I could imagine just how they looked and it was amazing to be able to see this almost panoramic view of these people’s homes. Two, the characters were well written and entertaining. The only thing I had trouble with was keeping track of who all was who (and thus the family tree in the beginning of the book that I referred back to often once I had “met” so many people). I’m currently waiting for the next book (China Rich Girlfriend) to be available from my library. I totally wanted to roll right into book 2 but I’ll have to wait a bit.

4 Stars! This book is accurately titled. The characters in this book are ridiculously rich and they are just as ridiculously crazy. I read this as part of the #bigbookbuddyread on Instagram and we've been having a great time discussing topics that relate to our everyday lives!Rachel Chu is a successful woman in New York. She has a great education and she is in finance. She's also dating Nick Young who is also a successful guy in New York. Nick's family lives in Singapore and he decides now is the summer to take Rachel there to finally meet his family, plus it's his best friends wedding. He doesn't tell her anything, which may be a big mistake on his part or is it?They arrive in Singapore and Rachel is in for a big surprise. His family is filthy rich (i'm talking billions of dollars in wealth) and she had no idea. The story goes through Rachel's journey over the few weeks they are there and she is one tough cookie. Everything and everyone there only cares about status and family names. Rachel is an outsider so you can guess how they feel about her. Family members and friends put Rachel through the ringer and just when you think she may give up she learns a big family secret that changes her entire outlook. This book and it's characters are so extra (that's the term kids are using these days, right?!) They are so overdramatic and ridiculous that it makes this story that much juicier. I'm personally a reality TV junkie so the more drama and over the top the better. That is probably one of the reasons why I did enjoy this story. I also loved it because I enjoy hearing stories about people standing up for who they are and being proud of where they come from which is what Rachel does. Are you going to get a ton of depth and long burning questions out of this novel? No. But you will definitely get some entertainment! I also enjoy the secret story that the author put in at the end (you'll have to read to find out!). It really ties everything together and was a nice change from all the brutality that Rachel faced. It's true what they say, money changes people and I'll tell you that regardless of how much money they offered me I wouldn't want to be part of the Young's, I'll just continue reading about them instead. There are 2 other books in this series and I plan to read both of them! I need to find out what happens with Rachel and Nick and their families!Oh! And the movie for this is coming out in August and I hope it sticks close to the book. I will be going to see it in theaters!

I wanted to like this book. The premise was interesting, and I did enjoy learning something about a sub-culture about which I had known nothing. But I found there to be far too many hastily-drawn characters included in the story with no real purpose. I would have preferred the novel if it had focused on fewer characters but had really developed them. As it was, I found myself not really caring about any of them.

This book held some geographical interest. The author obviously knows the area well. But all the designer labels and glorification of materialism grew tiresome to even read. I guess that was the point, but it became tedious and less interesting as the story progressed.

I found myself unable to finish this book. Nothing but page after page of food, clothing and snarky name dropping. After reading about 40 pages, the reader has actually read it all. Nothing but more of the same. The actual plot of the book moves at a snails pace. Wish I had read the negative reviews before ordering up this turkey.
